Sometimes it’s difficult to choose just one shade when you love bright colors on your hair so much.

That’s why Splat has an expansive line of hair colors where you’ll definitely see a shade or two that you’ll like.

But when you feel like changing your hair color again, does Splat come out of hair?

In this article, we’ll tell you the secrets on how to effectively remove Splat hair dye from your hair, so read more below.

What is Splat hair dye?

What is Splat hair dye

Splat hair dye specializes in semi-permanent and permanent hair dyes that are vegan and cruelty-free.

They have several kits to choose from, depending on your hair type and the color you want to achieve.

Since most of the colors are vivid, you’ll need to bleach your hair for some colors so they can show up better. But some kits already have bleach included, so you don’t have to worry about it.

But if you’re wary about bleaching your hair, they also have a kit that deposits bold colors for medium brown to blonde hair without using bleach.

Lastly, they also have a line of temporary colors that can easily wash out with warm water. So they’re great for when you only want the color to last for an event.

Splat hair dye won’t rinse clear

If you’ve been dyeing your hair for a while, then you’ve probably heard the advice to wash your hair until the water runs clear to avoid staining your skin or pillowcases later.

But what should you do if you’ve been rinsing your hair for 30 minutes and the water still won’t turn clear?

After dyeing, Splat recommends using a sulfate-free shampoo when rinsing with cold water to ensure that the dye is washed out of your hair. Also, gently massaging your scalp and hair will help speed up the process.

You’ll know when the dye is out when your hair doesn’t feel slimy anymore, even though the water still doesn’t run clear.

That’s because semi-permanent dye only coats the outer layer of your hair, so it’s easy for the color to wash out.

How do you remove Splat hair dye at home?

As vivid as their hair colors are, Splat hair dye has a reputation for being difficult to strip out of your hair.

But that doesn’t mean it’s completely impossible to remove. So how do you get semi-permanent Splat out of your hair?  Well, here are a few ways:

How to remove Splat hair dye with baking soda

On their official website, Splat actually recommends using a baking soda mixture to remove the dye from your hair before using any chemicals. As it’s safer compared to the damage other methods will do to your hair.

To do this, combine baking soda and clarifying shampoo together to make a paste. Then, crush a couple of vitamin C tablets and add them to the mixture. Apply it evenly to your hair, then wait a few minutes.

Use warm water to wash out your hair to open up your cuticles. You can repeat this method for a few more days until all the colors are out.

But if you have light hair before dying it with Splat, there’s an alternative process you can try.

To start, mix baking soda, dishwashing soap, dandruff shampoo, purple shampoo, and 10 volume developer. After applying, let the mixture sit for 20-30 minutes.

Remember to check on your hair every few minutes as this mixture lifts color quickly. So adjust the time depending on how fast it works on your hair.

Finally, wash your hair and apply a moisturizing conditioner if it feels dry.

How to remove Splat hair dye with color remover

Depending on the Splat hair color you used, a color remover can fade it without affecting your natural hair color.

So if you currently have a dark shade but want to lighten it for 1-3 levels, a color remover can work well.

Splat has its own color remover that works for removing fantasy colors and direct dyes.

Let the product sit on your hair for a maximum of 1 hour. So if the color is not entirely removed, wait for at least 24 hours before applying the color remover again.

But if you want to try a different brand of color remover, remember to read the label since not all color removers will fade out semi-permanent hair color or direct dye.

How to remove Splat hair dye with bleach

If you tried the methods above and nothing worked, your last resort will have to be bleach. It’s the most effective but also the riskiest method.

So only attempt this if your hair is healthy or you think it can handle the damage bleach will do to your hair. Otherwise, you’ll end up with weak and brittle hair.

Bleach works by penetrating your hair cuticles to remove its pigments. So if you previously have dark hair, the bleach will lighten it along with the Splat hair dye.

Also, depending on the color you have on, it’s not guaranteed the bleach will remove it in one application as there will still be underlying pigments leftover. So you might have to repeat the process 2-3 more times.

Just remember to space your bleaching session 2-3 weeks away from each other to allow your hair to recover.

But if you want a gentler formula, you can also try a bleach bath.

It’s where you’ll dilute the bleach by adding shampoo to the mixture. But it will still be as effective for removing Splat hair dye.

You’ll need to mix bleach, hydrogen peroxide, clarifying shampoo, and water. Apply the mixture to your hair in sections to ensure an even application. Leave it on for 30 minutes before rinsing it out.

Remember to apply a hydrating conditioner to bring back moisture into your hair.

How to get purple Splat out of hair

Purple, blue, and green are the hardest dye colors to remove from your hair, whether it’s a permanent or semi-permanent hair dye.

So how do you remove purple Splat dye from your hair?

You can try doing the methods mentioned above. The baking soda mixture or a color remover will slowly fade out the purple in your hair, so you might have to repeat the process a couple of times.

Only use bleach if the other methods won’t work, as it’s a very harsh process. But avoid bleach altogether if your hair is brittle or has a history of being chemically lightened with bleach.

You can also try neutralizing the purple by using the color theory method.

It’s a process where you use its opposite color in the color wheel to cancel out the unwanted tone. Similar to using a purple shampoo to cancel out brassy hair.

So, in this case, you can neutralize the purple by using a yellow or orange toner or dye.

If the purple dye in your hair leans towards a blue-violet shade, opt for an orange toner or dye. While if it’s more of a red-violet color, pick a yellow toner or dye.

If you choose to use a toner, you will need to tone your hair again after a few weeks since its effect is only temporary. But if you pick the hair dye, you’ll only need to apply it once.

You can also turn this into a hair mask by wrapping your hair up in a shower cap and leaving it on for 4-8 hours. This will soften the stains, as well as moisturize your hair.

Baking soda and dishwashing soap

You’ve probably heard of using baking soda and dishwashing soap for removing hair dye. So it’s no surprise when they’re also useful for removing dye stains from your skin.

To start, mix baking soda and dish soap to form a paste. Apply the mixture to stained areas of your skin and gently massage to get the dye off.

Repeat the process 2-3 times until all the colors are out.

Rubbing alcohol

Rubbing alcohol is also effective for removing hair dye stains off your skin.

You’ll only need to soak a cotton pad with alcohol and rub it gently on your skin. Be careful not to apply too much as alcohol can be drying.

But if the alcohol is too irritating for your skin, wash it off with cold water immediately.

If your skin feels dry after using alcohol, you can apply body lotion on your hands or moisturizer on your face and neck.

Baby wipes

Baby wipes are also great for removing stubborn stains from your skin as they also contain alcohol.

Just grab a piece of baby wipe and rub it gently on a stained patch of your skin. Remember not to scrub too hard to avoid irritating your skin.

Use as many wipes as you need until all stains are off.

Make-up remover cream

If a make-up remover cream can take layers of make-up off your face, then it can also remove Splat hair dye stains off your skin.

Plus, you don’t have to worry about it drying your skin. Since it has a gentle formula as it’s meant for your face.

To try, spread the cream on stained areas of your skin and remove excess product with a cotton pad. You can repeat the process until all stains are off.
