7 DIY Natural Homemade Heat Protectant For Hair

By: | Last Updated: January 19, 2020

Sometimes it’s fun to shop. Walking through the aisles, looking at all the different products can be therapeutic. And other times it’s very satisfying making our own stuff. Be it a cake, a dress, a jersey, a little clutch bag, or a natural heat protectant for your hair.

Let’s wander down the aisles of all the different DIY recipes for heat protectant sprays that you can whip up in the comfort of your own home.

What is a good natural heat protectant for hair?

Shea butter has a natural thermal conductivity which means it conducts the heat more evenly. It coats the hair strands like silicone. Not only does it protect hair, but it also restores moisture, soothes dry scalp and protects the hair from the sun.

You can use different oils as heat protectant. For more ideas on which oils to use as heat protectant, check out this article!

Let’s figure out how to make a homemade heat protectant spray for hair at home with different ingredients.

7 DIY Recipes: Homemade Heat Protectant for Hair

We’ve compiled different recipes to make your own DIY heat protection spray / cream. Let’s begin!

1. DIY heat protectant cream with shea butter

The Creamy Three-Ingredient One

What You Need:
  • ½ cup (125ml) shea butter
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) refined avocado oil
  • 10 drops essential oil (Lavender for all hair types, Geranium for color-treated or damaged hair, Rosemary for oily hair and Peppermint for dry hair)
  • Spray bottle
  • Funnel

Method:

Mix the avocado oil and shea butter in a mixing bowl. When it is soft enough, use an electric hand mixer on high speed until it’s fluffy and light. It’s important that your whip it since shea butter in its natural state is very thick.

Add your chosen essential oil and mix on high speed for another 10 seconds or so. Place the cream in a glass jar, preferably made of dark glass as it will help with preserving the cream.

Please note this is a very rich and luxurious cream. Use the cream sparingly from mid hair to ends on damp hair before styling your hair with your favorite heat tool. Keep the cream in a cool, dry place.

If you’ve tried oil-based heat protectant recipes and found that they weighed your hair down, try shea butter! Kelly from PrimarillyInspired.com swears by it.

2. DIY heat protectant spray with avocado oil

The Simple One

What You Need:
  • ½ cup (125 ml) distilled or filtered water
  • 25 to 38 drops refined avocado oil
  • Spray bottle
  • Funnel
Method

Choose a spray bottle that is easy to use with a good spray action. A used spray bottle could work very well. Using a funnel, fill it with distilled or filtered water and mix the avocado oil.

The amount of oil will depend on your hair. For those with fine hair, add less. For thick hair, add more. Shake the bottle well before each use. Spray The Simple One on your hair and style your hair as usual. This mixture can be used on wet or dry hair.

We love it on our toast and in our salads but did you know avocado can also be used in your hair. The oil revitalizes the scalp and tames frizzy hair.

You can also substitute the avocado oil for macadamia oil or coconut oil or almond oil. Macadamia oil is known for its ability to untangle and give back shine to dull hair. The antifungal and antibacterial properties of coconut oil boost the texture and overall hair health. Almond oil locks in moisture and helps with hair loss.

3. DIY heat protectant spray with coconut oil

The Coconut One

What You Need:
  • 1 cup (250 ml) distilled or filtered water
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) melted coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) of your favorite silicone conditioner
  • 4 drops almond oil or grapeseed oil
  • Spray bottle
  • Funnel
Method

Using a funnel, pour the water in a spray bottle. Carefully add the melted coconut oil and the almond oil in the bottle. Shake the bottle well until the ingredients are mixed.

Transfer the conditioner to the other ingredients. Shake well and remember to shake it every time you use it as the ingredients might separate when you are storing it. Work the spray through your hair with a comb or your fingers ensuring that all hair strands are covered before styling it.

The advantages of almond oil are it softens, strengthens, repairs your hair, strengthens your hair, and reduces hair loss as well. It boosts the health of the follicles due to its Vitamin E content.

Grapeseed oil slows the aging of hair and fights dandruff. It can even help to regrow hair lost due to Alopecia Areata.

How to use coconut oil as heat protectant:

While you can use extra virgin coconut oil on its own, it’s best to mix it up with other essential oils.  Aarushi Jain shows you how in her video tutorial below:

4. DIY heat protectant spray with aloe vera

The Aloe Vera One

aloe vera gel – Curling Diva
What You Need:
  • 1/2 cup water (125 ml) distilled or filtered water
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) aloe vera gel
  • 6-8 drops olive oil
  • Spray bottle
  • Funnel
Method

Using the funnel, pour the water in your spray bottle. Add the olive oil and the aloe vera to the water. Shake the bottle so that the ingredients mix well. Use the spray as your natural and inexpensive heat protectant.

How to use aloe vera gel as heat protectant:

Another bonus of aloe vera is it contains a proteolytic enzyme and this repairs dead skin cells on the scalp, reducing dandruff and itching. Keratin, the type of protein that primarily makes up our hair, has a chemical makeup similar to that of aloe vera, according to the Diane Gage, author of the book “Aloe Vera: Nature’s Soothing Healer“. This is probably the reason why Aloe Vera helps rejuvenate hair, making it more elastic and helps prevent breakage.

In her video below, jauntyjanki shows us how it’s done:

5. DIY heat protectant spray with argan oil

The Argan One

What You Need:
  • ½ cup (125 ml) Moroccan argan oil
  • Oil mister spray bottle
  • Funnel
Method

Using a funnel, pour the oil into an oil mister as normal spray bottles will unfortunately clog.

Lightly spray the oil on the ends of your hair. Begin with a tiny amount and brush or comb your hair from root to tip. See if there is enough product in your hair. If there is, great. If your hair needs a little more, repeat the process. Style your hair as desired. The shelf life of this product is about four to six months if stored in a cool, dry place.

Argan oil moisturizes, conditions and improves scalp health due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It also prevents styling and coloring damage.

6. DIY heat protectant spray with essential oils.

The Essential Oil Blend One

What You Need:
  • 1 cup water (250 ml) filtered or distilled water
  • 1 teaspoon (5ml) fractionated coconut oil (this is a product made from coconut oil that has the ability to stay liquid even in the fridge)
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) sweet almond oil
  • 2 teaspoons (10 ml) hair conditioner
  • 5 drops clary sage essential oil
  • 5 drops geranium essential oil
  • A glass spray bottle that can hold 300ml liquid
  • Funnel
Method

Using the funnel, pour half of the water in the glass bottle. A glass bottle made from dark glass will protect the essential oils from light and help them remain potent. Add the coconut oil, sweet almond oil, conditioner, clary sage, and geranium essential oil into the bottle.

Pour the remaining water in the bottle. Shake the bottle to mix all the ingredients and remember to do so with each use. Sprits the protector on your hair, wet or dry, and style.
