Dyson Airwrap Styler Review: Does it live up to its hype?

By: | Last Updated: November 16, 2021

There’s nothing like stepping out of the salon with a freshly done blow out descending into cascading waves. The sheen, the bounce, and the confidence!

Achieving a salon-quality blowout at home takes some practice.. and skill.

Dyson Airwrap has made it easy to create a professionally blown out look, at home.

Since its release in 2018, the Airwrap technology shifted the way the hair industry approached the blowout. This is echoed by women on waitlists to get their hands on this $500+ styler.

With the price tag still not wavering and the initial wave hasn’t died down, I bravely decided to get my hands on the Dyson Airwrap Wand to take a look for myself.

Encased in a Hermes-like copper leather capsule, the Dyson is packaged to perfection.

Peering into its contents, I laid everything out and noticed it’s not as heavy as I expected. It’s quite light, actually.

Contents:
I recommend using a 0.75 to 1 inch barrel for hair that falls above your shoulder line as you have less hair to wrap around the barrel.

Airwrap Feature 5/5

The air wrap feature is undoubtedly the star of the show.

It’s completely revolutionized how women style their hair at home and we get why it’s topped the hair industry Top Tool’s lists. The curved airflow has changed the way we approach a blow out as the hair does not come into contact with direct heat.

Hot & Cool Feature 3/5

Heat styles and creates the curl and the cool air sets the curls.

It saves us having to cup the hair in the palm of our hands to wait for it to cool. And prevents us from pinning the hair while it cools, sometimes creating those pin indentations that leave tell-tale ripples on the hair.

The Attachments 3/5

It comes with three brush attachments and one round volumizing bristle brush to give the hair more shape. Plus, a soft smoothing brush for fine hair and a Firm smoothing brush to reign in frizzy hair.

Different attachments provide great alternatives if you want to switch up your style. You can quick blowdry and brush through before styling.

The two clearly marked barrels to go clockwise and counter-clockwise give you lustrous curls that fall away from your face is near genius. Two 1.2’’ barrels create voluminous curls and the 1.6’’ barrels create flowing, looser waves.

Lastly, they included a pre-styling dryer attachment to round off the set.

What We Liked

The Result

Professional salon quality hair every day is something we’d give a limb for. For the price over the years of using the tool is definitely worth it in my opinion.

Dyson has a leg up on the competition as their air filtration technology solidified them as a leader in the vacuum cleaning world. It’s no real surprise they’d translate their advancement into the haircare industry.

Ease and convenience

Using the Dyson Airwrap is simple and doesn’t require any intensive form of labor from your wrist.

The technology does it all for you. Isn’t that what being a modern woman is all about?

The hair flows according to the airflow and barrel attachment. Switch to the cooling feature to set the curl loose.

Gentle on hair

If you’re trying to stay away from applying direct heat from your hair or are recovering from heat damage.

The Airwrap does a great job of using hot air to style. Making it less damaging than ceramic heated plates that come into direct contact with your hair, creating more damage.

What we didn’t like

The Price

The first thing I heard about the Airwrap, other than the features, was the price. And hefty one at that.

Although the technology has been a game-changer, the price tag is definitely off-putting. But you can easily find a few “dupes” on the market.

No separating clips included

For $500+, the Airwrap should come with all the brushes dryer attachment and separating clips.

The airflow can blow some of the other hair around which can create a frizzy appearance if you’re not attentive. Padded separating clips could complete the set.

Feels Cheap

For the price, you’d expect it to be made of some other heavier material and cushioned grip.

It’s surprisingly really lightweight, which is great for daily use, but feels a little flimsy.

I don’t really like tools where I have to be extra gentle in case they break. But Dyson does have a 2-year guarantee on this tool, which calms my nerves a bit

With the CHI Spin N Curl, the barrel is built inside.

Your hair wraps in the direction of your choice, without switching attachments like the Airwrap.

Press the spin button to curl the hair around the barrel. Wait for the 4 beeps and you’re all set. The outer casing keeps the hair away from fingertips so you don’t risk getting burnt.

If you’re trying to use less direct heat on your heat, this might not be the styler to try. It’s basically a tong on a protective case- we’re not too impressed for it as a dupe for the Dyson Airwrap curler. Read more about our in-depth CHI Spin N Curl review here.

The Revlon One Step dryer-volumizer combination is bigger than the Airwrap.

Its secret is the 1100 watts it packs in its simple design. The sheer power makes the hair soft and light and manageable once semi-dry. The oval-shaped paddle brush design tames frizz and creates a slight wave at the ends of the hair.

It’s much simpler to use than the Airwrap as it doesn’t have multiple interchangeable attachment heads.

If you don’t mind the added blast of heat and are looking to create a more subtle Jennifer Aniston 90’s look, you might want to give this power tool a chance.

The Drybar Double Shot Blow Dryer Brush gives hair volume and a slight wave. You might want to give it a miss if your hair is on the shorter side. It also has one barrel which does not give variety in styles.

Long and curly-haired girls will adore this find. You can wrap your hair around the large surface area of the brush head for even distribution of heat.

This is more for a subtle wave. It gives you the Dyson Airwrap Day 3 hair for a softly tousled look. We love it for its ease and straightforward design.

Dyson Airwrap Styler Review: Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Dyson Airwrap good for frizzy hair?

The Dyson Airwrap makes hair frizzy when the hair is dry.

Ensuring the hair is damp and moisturized to allow the negative ions that break up water particles that hydrates hair, seals hair cuticles, neutralizes static, and keeps the frizz at bay.

We swear by the Ouidad PlayCurl Curl Amplifying Foam to comb through with your fingers before using the Dyson Hair curler. It’s great for taming frizz on fine and curly hair.

Does Dyson Airwrap damage hair?

The Dyson Airwrap is super gentle on your hair and has relatively low wattage.

Its hot and cool air system ensures your hair does not come into contact with excessive hot irons or ceramics that can cause breakage and weaken your strands.

Applying a heat protectant spray before curling boosts your hair strength against heat. Additionally, the lasting curls mean less frequent use of the tool on your hair in between styles and wash days.

If you’re worried about damage, check out this post on the least damaging curling iron.

Can you curl dry hair with Dyson Airwap?

Yes, you can curl dry hair with the Dyson Airwrap.

But they’ll fall out sooner as damp hair is more pliable and the filtration system works best with slightly damp hair to lock in moisture and seal the ends.

How long does it take to curl hair with Dyson Airwrap?

Less than 20 minutes!

How to make my Dyson Airwrap curls last

If you’re finding that the Dyson Airwrap curls are not lasting, you need to make sure the hair is not weighed down by heavy gels, oils, or serums in your hair.

Rake a few pumps of mousse through a t-shirt or microfibre dried hair and Airwrap a small section of hair.

After wrapping the hair, you can cup in your hand and cold down even further by using hair spray.

Brushing out the hair after you’ve completed the whole look will help it set even further, reducing the curl from dropping out. This is a surefire way on how to get Dyson Airwrap curls to stay in all day.

Is Dyson Airwrap worth it?

If screen siren curls or defined beach waves are your signature style, this is definitely worth the investment.

The Airwrap on its own has been a game-changer, and I get why. Besides the price, it’s a great investment and will save you a ton of money if you treat yourself to weekly or bi-weekly blowouts.

It’s no wonder it made it to Allure Readers’ Choice Awards – Best of Beauty 2020 and also the GLAMOUR 2020 Beauty Award. Even bloggers, especially those with fine hair, rave about it.

The best Dyson Airwrap tip for short hair is to use the barrels a few inches away from your scalp to only curl the bottom portion of your hair. Otherwise, it can look a little poofy especially with the smallest barrel.

The attachments will not give you the completely sleek style. But will essentially do somewhat of a good job, which makes me think the additional attachments, even though useful, are outshined by the Airwrap barrels.

That just stepped out the salon look Pantene hair commercial will make any girl feel on top of the world. And Dyson’s packaged it onto a hair shelf near you.
