Natural DHT Blockers

Some of the most widely used, proven DHT blocking ingredients are natural proteins, nutrients, and vitamins. Check labels for ingredients like saw palmetto, stinging nettle, or pumpkin seed oil. All of these have properties to help stop hair loss.

Choosing a product that blends DHT blockers with hair growth stimulants will give you the best results possible in combating hair loss.

Included in the list of natural hair growth stimulants are caffeine, biotin, and rosemary oil. These ingredients all have healthy hair benefits and usually smell better than chemically produced products! You’ll find oils like castor, coconut, tea tree, and lemongrass.

There are other nutrients that work with DHT blockers to improve the overall health of your scalp. Look for Niacin, which increases circulation to your scalp and promotes the break-up of DHT in your follicles. Folic Acid (folate) repairs DNA. Healthy DNA assures healthy cells, and in turn healthy hair.

These are just a few examples of the natural substances that block, bust up, and remove DHT from your hair follicles. When you combine them all together you’ve got a serious hair loss fighting arsenal. With natural ingredients like these, you will be confident that your hair will feel fuller, cleaner, and look amazing!

Medicated DHT Blockers

There are no FDA approved DHA blocking medications to treat female pattern baldness. There is one oral medication approved for male pattern baldness, called Finasteride. You may see it referred to also as Propecia.

Finasteride

Finasteride does work to treat female pattern baldness but is not recommended for women by the FDA. It can cause severe birth defects. If you are not pregnant or nursing, and do not plan to become pregnant, Finasteride might be a good fit for you.

Your doctor can prescribe you Finasteride for relief from hair loss. This is something called an “off label” use and is approved by the FDA.

Finasteride works like natural DHT blockers to stop 5-alpha reductase from converting testosterone to DHT. It can take a minimum of 3 months to see less hair loss using the treatment. Most of the time, best results are seen at the 6-12 month mark.

Finasteride DHT Blocker Side Effects

Studies do show there are negative side effects of Finasteride that include and are not limited to tiredness, low sex drive, breast tenderness or enlargement, and hair shedding. Patients using Finasteride may also experience depression and anxiety.

These symptoms are especially prevalent in pre-menopausal women. Women who are pregnant or nursing cannot use Finasteride. It is a high risk pregnancy drug that can cause harm to the fetus. It should never be used during pregnancy

There is an FDA approved topical medication recommended to treat male and female pattern baldness. This is Minoxidil. It’s important to note that Minoxidil does not block DHT. Instead, it is used to promote significant hair regrowth.

What about Minoxidil?

While Minoxidil is not a DHT blocker per se, it does help women with regrowth of hair during use. Minoxidil is the only FDA approved treatment for female pattern hair loss. It seems to allow hair to spend less time in its resting phase, called the telogen phase, and more time in the anogen, or growth phase. This stimulation of follicles during their growth phase has been shown to give women a higher hair count, resulting in thicker and fuller hair.

Like Finasteride, Minoxidil does have side effects. They include symptoms related to contact dermatitis and hypertrichosis. If you have contact dermatitis, your scalp might be itchy or irritated. Redness in your scalp could be a sign of irritation, too.

Hypertrichosis is the excessive growth of hair in places you might not want it. You might see hair growing lower down your forehead. It might show up on the sides of your face. It is possible hypertrichosis lessens as you use Minoxidil over time. If you are pregnant or nursing you should not use Minoxidil. It has been found to be passed into breast milk.
