How to Use Hot Rollers For Long Hair
Clearly, there are many electric curlers for long hair that you can just plug to heat up and leave rolled onto your hair to work its magic. The market is filled with these amazing products that have been tried and tested by many, and depending on what you’re aiming for, you can pick the product that you think is best for you. At the end of the day, however, it all boils down to how you use it. Each of these hot roller sets will surely come with an instruction manual that you need to study by heart, but most follow these steps:
1. Be clear about what you want to do, and finish the necessary preps.
Before starting, you have to be clear about what you want to achieve. Do you want loose curls that start from the shoulder down, or do you want extra voluminous ringlets that begin at the crown? Your end goal will determine what size of rollers you should choose (the rule is the bigger the roller, the bigger the curl) and how you will prepare for it. Remember that because you will be using hot rollers, you need to give your hair added protection from heat damage.
2. Section your hair accordingly.
Depending on your plan, divide your hair into sections using clips. The usual way is to divide your hair into three major sections (both sides and the middle), and then work from there. But doing this step beforehand will save you some time and lessen the possibility of your hair getting tangled and such.
3. Pre-heat the rollers.
Most hot rollers take just a short time to be fully heated, so work on this step after you’ve decided what you really want to accomplish. Depending on the brand you buy, rollers usually come with a heating bed or compartment and all you have to do is press a button. Usually, there’s also an indicator light, telling you if the heating process is done. Just make sure you read the voltage requirements as well as the proper way to do it, in order to avoid accidents and also to protect yourself from the heat. You don’t want to end up burning your fingers.
4. Do the rolling.
Once the rollers are heated, you can then put these rollers one by one, starting from the top (nearest the crown). Never start from the bottom because this gives you a higher chance of tangling your hair, and it’s a lot messier to handle. When you roll your hair, make sure that the ends are included and that the section of hair you’re working with is not wider than the roller. Roll hair towards your scalp and then secure each roller with a clip. Most rollers come with their own clips, but it’s best to have your own for contingency purposes, and because sometimes the clip needs support. Repeat until all sections of your hair are rolled up.
5. Sing a happy tune or do something productive.
Consult the instruction manual as to how long you should allow the rollers to stay on your hair, but generally, you should just wait for it to cool down. If you’re not in a hurry, try to keep them there are long as you can because the longer it sets the longer your curls will also stay throughout the day. While waiting, you can do so many other things that will make you forget about the waiting time altogether. You can either do your makeup, do some last minute house chores, change into your outfit, or many other things.
6. Remove the rollers one at a time.
In removing the rollers, start from the bottom layers or the last ones you put on. If you start from the top, you’ll end up tangling your hair and that’s the last thing you want to happen now that your hair is all pretty and romantic. Wait until you’ve removed everything, then you can run your fingers through your hair or use a paddle brush. This depends on what hairstyle you were going for. If you have delicate ringlets, however, do neither because it will only break the ringlets apart. Putting some hairspray for an extra hold is also advisable.
Now that you have the curls you’ve always dreamed about, don’t forget to enjoy. The best thing about using hot rollers is that the curls actually stay a lot longer, so you don’t have to keep looking at the mirror and wondering if your hair is holding up just fine. It will last you through the day and night, and you will have earned it.
